For beginners, there are 5 pre-songs I teach prior to teaching the Suzuki Volume 1 book. I also start using “I can read music” during lessons to teach note reading.
We continue with Volume 2 Suzuki and note reading book 2 of “I can read music” during lessons. Students start writing on staff paper 2 octave major and melodic minor scales. If note reading book is too easy we will use a duet book by Applebaum.
Volume 3 Suzuki has a little shifting. Scales continue
Volume 4 Suzuki I use in conjunction with a book “fun with solos” by Avasharian found at Sharmusic.com. We also start 3 octave major, melodic minor and chromatic scales.
Volume 5 and above continue with scales and supplemental etudes on shifting as needed. Usually work on All State Orchestra audition material May-October.
Recitals:
Halloween solo recital, the weekend before Halloween.
Spring solo recital, irish fiddle songs and Suzuki solo’s.
Summer recital, end of July. Fun song (usually Disney ect.), duets and a solo from Suzuki repertoire.
